The Oval at Subi East has been shortlisted in the 2025 Australian Urban Design Awards.

UDLA, in partnership with OCULUS, delivered urban design and landscape architecture for DevelopmentWA’s 35-hectare Subi East Redevelopment Masterplan, of which The Oval is the first completed stage.

One of the most significant urban infill projects in Western Australia’s history, the Subi East Masterplan reimagines the former Subiaco Oval as a series of community-centred public spaces. As the first built stage, The Oval has transformed the former Subiaco Oval into a series of community-focused public open spaces, including a reimagined oval with community sports facilities, a new playground, a parkour course, and an extensive Noongar Six Seasons Bidi that meanders through the site to reveal stories, endemic plantings and six artworks by Noongar artists.

The new parkland also incorporates restored heritage gates, repurposed elements from the former stadium, and an open-air museum celebrating the oval’s legacy as the historic home of WA football. The result is a multi-generational public asset that honours the past while shaping the future.

Established in 1996, the Australian Urban Design Awards are jointly convened by the Australian Institute of Architects, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and the Planning Institute of Australia. The awards recognise outstanding examples of contemporary urban design and promote best practice across cities, towns, and communities nationwide.

Twenty-two projects have been shortlisted in 2025, with winners to be announced in Sydney on 30 April.
