Case Study: UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA CULTURAL HERITAGE mapping
revealING, mapPING and linkING the Cultural Heritage of the University of Western Australia’s Crawley Campus, as a place of learning on Country
THE CHALLENGE:
Integrating ancient and place based knowledge of the Crawley area, in a way that can inform and guide development of the UWA campus and surrounds. The process focused on a specific area of Nyoongar Country with the understanding and shared knowledge from the Elders that the Crawley area where the University is located is only a small piece of Nyoongar Country. Everything in Nyoongar Country is connected. “It’s one paragraph of a full book”. – Nyoongar Elder Farley Garlett
THE SOLUTION:
A ‘living’ document and Cross-Cultural Map, meaning the information is not static and can be continually reviewed and updated in order to maintain its strength and relevance not only specific to the Crawley campus but to all of Nyoongar Country.
THE OUTCOME:
1) The UWA Cultural Heritage Framework, a document intended as a high-level guide to provide direction to all future development on UWA’s Crawley Campus.
2) Creation of a richly layered, artistic and collaborative Cross-Cultural Map of UWA’s Crawley Campus, possibly a first for urban Australia.
