UDLA were engaged by LandCorp as an integral part of a team engaged to revitalise the South Hedland Town Centre.  UDLA were engaged at all scales of the project – for landscape planning, urban design, public art facilitation, community engagement and landscape architectural services.

The UDLA team designed and documented the Town Square, streetscapes and surrounding open spaces, as well as administering the landscape construction works. Community and stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, were engaged in a facilitated design process throughout the project.

The staging of landscape spaces in the Town Centre was designed with a long-term vision in mind. The South Hedland Town Square was the first space to be delivered, to act as a catalyst for the regeneration of surrounding areas. In line with this intent, the Town Square’s completion immediately prompted the upgrade and redevelopment of an adjacent shopping precinct. This transformed the surrounding streetscape and further consolidated the South Hedland Town Square as a new community hub.

A successful facilitated design processes leading to a strong planning framework has formed a solid foundation for this project.  This ensures that as activation and regeneration continue, further works can move forward with a clear shared direction, generated and supported by community.

OUTCOMES:
  • Large scale landscape plan which responds to the unique South Hedland conditions;
  • A built response which responds to the local condition; and,
  • Maximised community value through an engaged design process and continued facilitated discussion with Traditional Custodians and local authorities.
