Jetty to Jetty: Stories of Broome

Client:  Nyamba Buru Yawuru Ltd. and Shinji Matsuri
Location: Broome, WA
Dates: 2016
Collaborators: Nyamba Buru Yawuru Ltd. and Shinji Matsuri

In collaboration with Nyamba Buru Yawuru, UDLA designed Jetty to Jetty: Stories of Broome, an immersive, three night sound and projection event for the 2016 Shinju Matsuri Festival.  The design of this event allowed another layer in the communication of the stories and historical layers gathered and interpreted through the Jetty to Jetty Heritage Walk Trail.

Each night highlighted a key location on the Jetty to Jetty Trail – Streeters Jetty, Kennedy Hill and the Goods Shed, where attendees experienced projections, performances and aural histories telling the story of Broome’s pearling past and present.

  • A unique historic and cultural tourism event in Broome, providing both visitors and residents an authentic perspective on Broome’s pearling past;
  • An innovative, low impact and low cost approach to tourism that combines traditional knowledge and storytelling with contemporary technology; and
  • The use of soundscape, music and projection, in parallel with the existing Jetty to Jetty Heritage Walk Trail, to communicate the heritage of the Roebuck Bay foreshore.
